Danilo Squitieri began studying the cello with Ilie Ionescu, an extraordinary cellist and teacher. Subsequently, he was fortunate to meet and study with important cellists in chronological order: Cornelius Faur, Radu Aldulescu, Michele Chiapperino, Rocco Filippini, Francesco Strano, Luigi Piovano, Enrico Bronzi, Thomas Demenga, Antonio Meneses, and Enrico Dindo. He graduated with top honors and praise from the "Perosi" Conservatory in Campobasso, where he also completed the specialized two-year master's program with a grade of 110/110 with praise and the teaching qualification program with a grade of 100/100. In the 2003/2004 academic year, he completed his diploma at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with top honors in two years. Under the guidance of Rocco Filippini, he perfected his skills at the international courses in Sermoneta and, for many years, at the "Walter Stauffer" Academy in Cremona. He has performed numerous times as a soloist and in chamber music formations at the Grosser Saal, Kleiner Saal, and Neuer Saal of the Basel Academy, where in June 2006 he completed his studies with Thomas Demenga, graduating with top honors. In 2005, he studied with Antonio Meneses at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, receiving a scholarship. He also perfected his skills at the "Scuola Superiore Internazionale di Musica da Camera del Trio di Trieste" under the guidance of Dario de Rosa, Maureen Jones, Renato Zanettovich, and Enrico Bronzi, completing his course of study with merit. He was principal cellist of the "Archi di Santa Cecilia" directed by Luigi Piovano, with whom he recorded for Sony Classical. He has given concerts in Italy and abroad and has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions, notably the international "Città di Magliano Sabina" competition, the 2010 "Vittorio Gui" International Competition (a member of the Geneva International Music Competition federation) in a duo with pianist Vincenzo Oliva. He also won the 1st absolute prize at the Barletta Music Competition, the "I Giovani per i Giovani" Competition in Ravenna, the Cidac Competition in Scafati, the "Bernardo Santaniello" International Competition, the Jacopo Napoli Competition in Cava de' Tirreni, the "Scuola Concerto 2001" Competition, and the 2004 "Città di Magliano Sabina" Competition, again in collaboration with pianist Vincenzo Oliva. He won 1st prize in the "Il Solista e l'Orchestra" Competition and was chosen among the category winners for the final concert with the Regional Orchestra of Molise. He has been a member of the Adorno Quartet since its foundation in 2015, winning the prize for the best performance of a piece by the Second Viennese School conferred by the University of Vienna. Also with the Adorno Quartet, he was a resident ensemble of the ECMA-European Music Academy founded by Hatto Beyerle and won the third prize (with first prize unawarded), the special prize, and the audience prize at the "Paolo Borciani" International String Quartet Competition in 2017. In the thirty-year history of the Competition, no Italian quartet had ever achieved such recognition. In 2018, still with the Adorno Quartet, he made his debut at Wigmore Hall and won the Rimbotti Competition. In 2019, he and the quartet received the "UNA VITA NELLA MUSICA GIOVANI" award, and in 2023 he was awarded by the Rotary Club Nocera Inferiore-Sarno. In 2019, he recorded Zemlinsky's String Quartet No. 3, Op. 19, and Brahms's Quintet, Op. 115, with Alessandro Carbonare for the Decca Italia label. In 2021, for Decca Italia, he also recorded Castelnuovo-Tedesco's quintet with guitarist Giampaolo Bandini. With the Adorno Quartet, he has performed concerts for major Italian and international musical societies such as the London Chamber Music Society Series at Kings Place and Wigmore Hall in London, Ravenna Festival, La Società dei Concerti in Milan, Fondazione I Teatri in Reggio Emilia, MITO Festival, Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Associazione Clementi in Viterbo, Unione Musicale in Turin, International Chamber Music Festival in Cervo, Festival Echos, Portogruaro Festival, Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile, Podium für junge Solisten in Tegernsee, ACM Chamber Music in Trieste, Policontri Classica in Turin, Amici della Musica in Perugia, Amici della Musica in Cagliari, Festival Musique Chalosse in France, Allegro Vivo Festival in Altenburg, Musica Insieme in Bologna, Amici della Musica in Campobasso, Amici della Musica in Florence, Appassionata Festival in Macerata, Società del Quartetto in Bergamo, Associazione Scarlatti in Naples, MUCH Brussels, Soirées Musicales in Grimaud, Fondazione Cini in Venice, and Musikerlebnis in Munich. In 2019, he was chosen at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels—where he served as an "artist in residence"—to record Lekeu's piano quartet with Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, Julia Pusker, and Miguel Da Silva (Fuga Libera label of the Outhere group). The box set featuring this recording received an Editor's Choice review in Gramophone Magazine in April 2020, the "Diapason d'Or" award, the "Caecilia 2019" award, and the "Choc de Classica" award. In 2021, he performed in a live stream with Louis Lortie playing Fauré's Second Quintet, Op. 115, again for the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in collaboration with the Phillips Collection. Recently, he performed the Elgar concerto in Rome with the Roma Tre Orchestra. On tour with the Kharkiv Philharmonic, he performed Dvořák's Concerto, Op. 104, and with the "Accademia di Santa Sofia" Chamber Orchestra, Schumann's concerto. He has held masterclasses at the Higher Conservatory of Music in Malaga. In Italy, he taught at the Conservatory of Avellino from 2011 to 2016 and at the Conservatory of Potenza in the 2016/2017 academic year. He is a tenured cello professor at the "Pergolesi" Conservatory in Fermo, awaiting transfer to the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome after winning the 2025 mobility call. He plays a 1919 Francesco Guadagnini cello.
